This week a message has been sent to Local Government councillors and all Victorians that the Coalition Government will not turn a blind eye to self-interest or corruption.
As recommended in the Ombudsman’s damning report Whistleblowers Protection Act 2001 – Investigation into Allegations of Improper Conduct by a Councillor at the Hume City Counci/ I have asked the Local Government Investigations and Compliance Inspectorate to further investigate the conduct of Councillor Adem Atmaca in relation to possible breaches of the Local Government Act.
I have also asked my Department to refer matters relating to Councillor Atmaca’s visa improprieties to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship for investigation.
Unfortunately the inappropriate actions of a small minority of councillors have the potential to ruin the reputation of the vast majority of councillors who do the right thing and carry out their duties as elected representatives of the community with decency and integrity.
