$110,000 for Shepparton Community Foodshare: Powell

 Thursday, August 09, 2012

Member for Shepparton Jeanette Powell was pleased to announce today a Community Food Share will be established in Shepparton with the help of $110,000 in Victorian Government funding.

Mrs Powell said she had met several times with those involved in setting up the Shepparton Community Food Share and was delighted the government’s contribution would help the organisation provide food and material aid to vulnerable members of the greater Shepparton community.

“There has been a lot of work done to establish Shepparton Food Share Inc and I would like to congratulate Bill O’Kane from Foodbank Shepparton, the CEO of Foodbank Victoria Ric Benjamin, and all the local businesses, organisations and individuals committed to making this local Food Share a success,” Mrs Powell said.

“I was pleased to assist and be involved in the process of establishing Shepparton Food Share Inc and I know everyone involved will be delighted they have the funds for the project.”

Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional and Rural Development Peter Ryan said the Food Share would provide nutritious food for individuals and families in hardship and would help minimise the risks of malnutrition, obesity, diabetes and heart disease in the local population.

“The Food Share will be capable of receiving groceries, fresh fruit and vegetables, dairy and frozen products from a variety of local, regional and Melbourne based donors, including rescued food that would otherwise be wasted,” Mr Ryan said.

“The collection, receipt and distribution of products will be done by volunteers under professional guidance and our funding will go towards a walk-in fridge and freezer, refrigeration unit for a transport vehicle an d project management.”

Mrs Powell and Mr Ryan also paid tribute to the generous support of SPC Ardmona who have provided 500 square metres of warehouse space, a serviced office, waste disposal, pest control, volunteer training and a senior staff member one day per fortnight to co-ordinate the company’s involvement.

The Victorian Government funding is part of the $610,000 required over three years for the Shepparton Community Food Share project and would be coordinated with Foodbank Victoria through the $1 billion Regional Growth Fund’s Putting Locals First Program.

The Shepparton Community Food Share is expected to be operational from the beginning of July 2012.
